What is CPAP?
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is a piece of durable medical equipment designed to
provide a positive pressure that will open your airway during sleep as treatment for Obstructive Sleep
Apnea (OSA).

What are the different parts involved with CPAP?
CPAP consists of a small box-like device, tubing and a mask (there are numerous types of masks
that are prescribed based on the patients needs and comfort level).

How does one obtain CPAP?
One obtains CPAP by undergoing a sleep study, which quantifies whether there is a physiological
sleep problem, and then a physician may prescribe a CPAP device for treatment if applicable.

I heard this treatment can be difficult to tolerate, will I have any support to
help with acclimatation to CPAP?
CPAP is not for everyone, but it is important to educate the patient and walk them through the entire
process to make the adjustment to wearing CPAP as easy and tolerable as possible. Adjusting to
CPAP may take as long as 6 months to 1 year or be as quick as 1 night. At Gold Coast, we provide
an in-service of CPAP Management, where patients may schedule appointments at our office to
troubleshoot any CPAP problems they may be having. Furthermore, you may contact your DME
(Durable Medical Equipment - aka, the company that provides your CPAP) and ask them questions
as well.
